Your personal sphere of influence:

A PhD position is available in Pavlicev lab in the Department of Evolutionary Biology. The lab is interested in the interface between development and evolution/physiology, specifically we are trying to understand how the structure of development (physiology) influences the potential for evolutionary change. We use experimental as well as theoretical approaches in our work and focus on mammalian female reproduction as one of our major research topics. We are seeking a student to work on the evolution of the mammalian interface between mother and fetus during pregnancy, using model and nonmodel species. The work will involve animal handling, histological and transcriptomic analyses, as well as work in cell culture. While embedded in a supportive group, the student is expected to take lead in experiments, analyses as well as in drafting manuscripts.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 6-12 months.
  • You work on your dissertation and its completion.
  • You take active part in group meetings and group tasks.
  • You are involved in research projects and scientific studies in the area of evolutionary and reproductive biology.
  • You assist in teaching and administrating the relevant courses, as well as assist with master/bachelor theses
  • You present your results in intervals internally, as well as at the conferences, and work on publications
This is part of your personality:
  • Completed Master's degree or Diploma, in the field of Biology
  • Understanding of the main principles of scientific work (the roles of experiment and theory)
  • Basic experience with experimental methods (e.g., basic molecular biology)
  • Reasonable experience in academic writing
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 Level)
  • IT user skills: some command of R or Phyton is of advantage
  • knowledge in reproductive biology, histology or bioinformatic analysis is advantageous
  • Good social skills
What we offer:

Duration of contract: The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension. With appropriate work progress, an extension to a total of 3.5 years is possible.
