We invite you to apply for this position as a senior scientist and head of the future Core Facility for small-molecule mass spectrometry at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Vienna.Your personal sphere of influence:Your future workplace is situated at the Faculty of Life Sciences at the Universitätszentrum Althanstraße (UZA II) where research groups work in the pharmaceutical sciences, nutritional sciences and biology. You will head the future core facility for small-molecule mass spectrometry that collaborates with researchers from these fields who wish to apply small-molecule MS analysis in their research. Common applications include purity analysis, accurate quantification of compounds in biological samples, determining the accurate mass of synthesis products and metabolites, characterizing multi-compound mixtures, targeted and non-targeted metabolome profiling (metabolomics). Particular focus is on the analysis of natural products and multi-compound mixtures, including those of plant, microbial, fungal and marine origin.The position is initially limited to 1 year and can be converted to permanent upon mutual agreement. Your future tasks:You will manage a laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instrumentation (both MS/MS and high-resolution MS) located at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.You will actively contribute to the establishment and development of the future Core Facility for small-molecule mass spectrometry.You will optimize analytical workflows, perform analytical measurements and analyze MS data to deliver high-quality data for research projects, project proposals and publications.You will interact with researchers from various fields and discuss their research questions and implementation of MS analysis.You will monitor the performance of MS instruments, care about their maintenance and coordinate repair efforts.You will follow relevant literature and new analytical developments, and exchange with other existing core facilities (e.g. for proteomics).This is part of your personality:Open, collaborative and curious personality.Pro-active approach and highly motivated attitude.Ability to work independently, self-management skills and highly organized style of work and documentation.Advanced communication skills, ability to communicate with specialists from other fields as well as technical experts.Leadership skills to guide a small team.Education and training:Doctorate in (analytical, bio-)chemistry, systems biology, pharmacy or related fieldsPractical experience in operating mass spectrometry (GC- or LC-MS) instrumentation for small-molecule analysis (MS/MS- and high-resolution MS). Technical knowledge of MS instrumentation and practical experience with routine maintenance.Experience with method development for sample preparation and chromatographic separation techniques (liquid- or gas chromatography).Detailed knowledge of the analytical process and critical aspects for analytical quality in small-molecule analysis.Experience with common data analysis workflows in life science applications and/or systems biology (feature finding, ion annotation, basic statistical analysis). Experience with data visualization and biological interpretation of small-molecule MS data (e.g. metabolomics data sets) is highly desirable.Experience with one or more MS data analysis software packages or custom data analysis pipelines. Data management- and programming skills (R, Matlab, Python) are highly desirable.Fluent in English (in speech and writing).
